In a world where many people are starving while others have too much food the weird thing is that many of the people who have too much food are also starving. Their bodies just don’t get the nutrients they need.

It is hard to change your total food intake or total water consumption overnight. You certainly cannot just stop breathing the polluted air you live in.  Nor can you jump straight in to a strenuous program of exercise if you are currently doing nothing. But you can get started to a healthier way of living right now by ordering these juices.

First, we buy only carefully selected non-GMO organic seeds. Every batch is screened for disease vectors.

Seeds are soaked or started in a proprietary system - we made it ourselves - that assures that the seeds get exactly what they need to germinate. This means rinsing the seeds with water every twelve minutes for about 24 hours and ensuring that the seeds always have lots of nice sweet oxygen.

Then we lay out the germinated seeds in trays, put the trays into a multi layer rack and then water them twenty four hours a day, making sure that there is great air circulation.

 When the sprouts reach their perfect peak for harvesting we then gently squeeze the juice out (Yes! a low gear, slow speed grinder so as not to damage anything followed by a hydraulic press).

Then we cool the juice, add just enough organic lactic acid to prevent decay. (This is the age-old method of preservation of foods). However, we add the organic lactic (non-dairy) acid with a very light touch.

Then we seal  the juice into single serving tubes using a pharmaceutical grade system. We mark the best before date on every pouch with a date that is 16 weeks from production. While the nutrient values should last at least that long the colour may slowly change from green to less than green and the taste can change too eventually – but the juice is always safe. So, no need to refrigerate – although some people treat it like a white wine and prefer to drink it slightly chilled.

Next we go from age-old methods to star wars. We subject the juice - already tightly sealed in single serving containers - to ultra high pressure. This kills the bad bacteria  without hurting the desired qualities of the juices. Especially, this method leaves the enzymes intact and alive for you. Wheatgrass Juice is the liquid extracted from the sprouts of hard red winter wheat harvested at the stage immediately prior to the appearance of the first true jointing of the plant stem as it grows from seed. Young wheat grass. There are no seeds at this stage so that anyone allergic to gluten can relax. Gluten is only found in the seeds. No seeds. No gluten.

Wheatgrass was used back in the days of the old Persian Empire (about 3,000 years ago) to “restore the blood ”of women who had just had a child. More recently, wheatgrass juice enjoyed a vogue as a health tonic in the 1940’s. Then the age of fast foods and convenience foods eclipsed such health tonics.

Then through the evangelism of Dr. Ann Wigmore and others, wheatgrass juice again became known as a valuable tonic or nutritional food.

While there are people who make extravagant claims for the juice, there is a solid body of evidence from reliable sources that the juice is well worth taking at the rate of one or two fluid ounces per day. We are not allowed to tell you what is does for you but you can Google it and read carefully. 

A primary ingredient in the wheatgrass juice is the chlorophyll that gives the juice its distinctively green appearance. It not only possesses chlorophyll, but also amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes.

Wheatgrass is a complete protein in that it contains all amino acids.

Wheat  is the only seed known to have the ability to take up 90 or more minerals during it’s life cycle  --- which is in effect, close to all known minerals. This means that if grown with availability of nutrients, in the proper environment, wheatgrass will be very nutrient dense due to it’s incredible genetic design.

Enzymes are important for every function in the body. Digestive enzymes such as amylase and protease are found in wheatgrass juice. This is desirable since the body does not have to produce these in order to perform the digestive function of “processing” the wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass, in it’s raw state is abundant in enzymes. Juice that has been pasteurised (heat treated) will have lost most or all of its enzymes. Juice that has been spray dried will also have been subjected to high temperatures.

These enzymes, protease and amylase help the body break down fats and proteins. Because most enzymes occurring naturally in  food are killed off during processing or cooking, the body lacks the tools to breakdown those materials properly. This means that instead of digesting the food it is processed in the gut by fermentation with sugars.  This leads to indigestion, bloating and constipation. Worst of all the body doesn’t get the food values it needs.
Wheatgrass juice helps avoid such problems.

Are your juices certified organic? 
To be certified organic you must meet all the requirements of a government approved organic certifying body – such as the Soil Association. However, each country has its own certifying bodies and they have different requirements. This means that it is just about impossible for a product to satisfy the requirements for all the countries in which it sells its products. Our total sales are still small but we do sell in several countries.  
Currently, the Soil Association in Ireland and in the UK have refused to grant us organic status because our plants are grown hydroponically – in water not in soil.
Weird thing is that they do grant organic status to some big growers who grow sprouts unnaturally in big rotating drums – with no soil! Unnatural. It tumbles the seeds from time to time so that they don’t overheat and rot. Poor little sprouts get all confused about which way is up so instead of growing up straight towards the light they get curled up. Lot of stress on the plants,  Must be some legal thing.

 Meanwhile at VEGUS we do the best we can.
At VEGUS, we start with good non-GMO seeds. All our products are grown and packed absolutely with:

What about the enzymes?
We know that the enzymes are important to you so we take special care to ensure that we do not harm them as we make your juices. The plants get optimum nutrition, especially from the Ocean Grown fertiliser so that the plants have the best opportunity to do what they do best – convert light and water and fertiliser into nutrient dense bio-mass. When we squeeze and press the juice from the bio-mass we are careful to use a low speed unit so that the enzymes are not sheared and so that the juice is not heated. 

Next we use a pharmaceutical grade system for putting your juice in the little  tubes and sealing them.

Then to be sure that there are no pathogens such as e: coli or salmonella in your juice we subject it to a lot of isostatic ultra pressure. This kills the bugs without hurting the enzymes. Best of all it does the job without heating the juice. (Remember that heat kills enzymes).

Why plastic instead of glass?
Because a well respected German Research Institute made a study of packaging like this and concluded that these materials were equivalent environmentally to cardboard or glass bottles. They investigated not just the end of life disposal and recycling but also the origin of the materials used, the overall carbon footprint including transportation, etc.  They then passed their study to the German Federal Government who agreed with the conclusions of the study.  One of the horror stories uncovered was this: biodegradable plastics sound great. They get wet they the disappear! Problem for the recycling people is that one of the biggest uses of recycled plastic is in making builders plastic that is used as a vapour barrier in walls. Just one little bit of that biodegradable plastic in the vapour barrier and the vapour barrier disappears!!

Why not one big container  instead of seven little ones?
Remember, we said that enzymes don’t like oxygen? Oxidation degrades the activity level of enzymes. If we used a nice big container we would save money but the juice would suffer. Every time you drank one serving you would be closing up the container with a fresh supply of air and as the tube gradually empties there would be more and more air. More and more oxidation too. So that as you go down the tube the quality of the juice would get worse and worse. So we use a small tube. 

Why hydroponic instead of in soil?
If we were growing lettuce or tomatoes we might give in to an emotional pull to grow them in soil. But we are really processing seeds to the sprout stage and that’s a different world.

To get the full nutrient value from the plants we have to be sure that in their very short life span they get the optimum nutrition all day every day. Not too much, not too little, but the Goldilocks “just right”. In soil, that would be very difficult to manage but with the help of Ocean Grown fertiliser and a hydroponic system we can be sure that every single seed gets what it needs when it needs it. 

By the way, to produce a perfect crop every time and do it on a reliable schedule in soil we would have to find a location that offers:

· a perfect climate – not too hot, not too cold, not too humid, not too dry, etc 
· unpolluted water 
· perfect soil that does not need amendment – and that never wears out or depletes 
· regular hours of sunlight 
· no animals to feast on the plants

If anyone can show us that place we will probably want to go there. Meanwhile, our enclosed environment chambers do all of that for us with a hydroponic system. 

Why ship all the way from Ireland?
Because people in many countries want these juices and it is not practical to have farms scattered around the world. If we had a farm in Australia we would have to visit at least once a month to check on quality standards and all kinds of things. That would mean shipping Ariana or someone all the way to Australia at least once a month.  The carbon footprint  for shipping juice is less than that for sending Ariana. If we get to the point where that equation changes – lots and lots more Aussies ordering juices – then we will recalculate and maybe set up a farm in Australia. (or India, or South Africa, or  Timbucktu or wherever).

Why ultra high pressure?
After we put the juices in the little tubes we put them  into the pressure system and pump it up to  ultra high pressure (Think of ten elephants standing on one strawberry.) This high pressure kills all the bad guys such as salmonella and e:coli but leaves the enzymes happy and smiling – and live! 
But you don’t have to take our word for that. The survival of the enzyme is well documented and reported in peer reviewed scientific articles – such as:

And as regards  harmful bacteria we have an independent laboratory test batches to confirm freedom from pathogens.

Why add lactic acid?
First of all is the matter of how much do we use. The answer is about 50 ml of lactic acid in every 20,0000 mls of juice. Not that much.

We add this drop or two of lactic acid to prevent growth of botulin spores that could cause illness. We like our juice safe.

Also to be noted is that there are two types of lactic acid. A slaughterhouse product which is not organic - we would never use anything like that! Our lactic acid is organic in origin and totally safe. (By the way, for those who wonder: lactic acid has nothing to do with milk or any other dairy products. The Vegus juices do not contain any milk products).

What is your telephone contact number?
Even though our products are sold in several countries and various languages we are just a small business. If we add them up we are operating in at least ten different times zones. The  telephone could be ringing at just about any time of day or night  – and would need answering in languages we don’t speak! So we concentrate on doing our jobs and carefully monitoring and replying to emails and we don’t publish a telephone number.

What does the Best Before date mean?
Because of the pressure treatment the juice is safe to drink for years. (We tested it at four years of age). We also protect the enzymes and other nutrient values but the passage of time will eventually have some impact on the juice. The little bit of air trapped in the pouch will cause some oxidation or browning of the juice. But this is limited by the very small amount of air in the pouch. (Even if there were no air space in the pouch there would be some in the juice itself  - and we really don’t want to subject the juice to a de-aeration process (Ughh!) 
The flavour can also change a bit over time, The chemistry of flavenoids is among the most complicated known to man. We could stabilise the taste for ever but the chemistry required to do that is appalling. We don’t want to go there. So, we say that for up to about 16 weeks the juice is good but that just like all living things it is not getting younger and some deterioration is inevitable. Please note that broccoli sprout juice is not very green to start with. The reason is that the plant itself is not very green.  The roots and stem are white and only the tiny little leaves are green. ​

Exercise is Dangerous!

One of the most immediate benefits of exercising is that your lungs will start to work more efficiently and will increase their capacity. That is a big benefit because we are oxygen burners and the only way we get oxygen is by breathing it in. About 20,000 times a day every day.  No matter what exercise you do the lungs will improve: walking, swimming, skiing, yoga, weights, - whatever.
But if you are in an area with air pollution that means that your exercise-improved lungs suck in more pollution with every breath you take – 20,000 times a day.
Recently, world governments got together for a big talk fest in Paris. They decided they would have to set more standards and targets and make a lot more rules and have more meetings.

Meanwhile we are all still breathing bad air that gets worse. If the governments are not going to solve the problem any time soon, what can we do today to stop committing suicide every time we inhale?  Stop exercising? Stop breathing? Not good ideas.
But there is a way. The body tries to get rid of the pollution that you inhale -   the liver and kidneys work hard at this. Once these organs filter out the pollution by-products such as benzene (!) some of it can be let out in the urine –  but not all of it.

A group of scientists and doctors from American and Chinese Universities did a clinical trial in China giving a controlled group of people 40 micromoles a day of sulforaphane. Immediately they started getting rid of 61% more of those cancer causing products of air pollution. That 61% more, every day is a huge benefit to the body and slows down the accumulation of these poisons.
So where can you get a daily dose of sulforaphane?

The best source is from four day old broccoli sprouts. Broccoli sprouts are a convenient and rich source of the glucosinolate, glucoraphanin, which can generate the chemopreventive agent, sulforaphane, an inducer of glutathione S-transferases (GST) and other cytoprotective enzymes. A broccoli sprout-derived beverage providing daily doses of 600 μmol glucoraphanin and 40 μmol sulforaphane was evaluated for magnitude and duration of pharmacodynamic action in a 12-week randomized clinical trial. Two hundred and ninety-one study participants were recruited from the rural He-He Township, Qidong, in the Yangtze River delta region of China, an area characterized by exposures to substantial levels of airborne pollutants. Exposure to air pollution has been associated with lung cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases. Urinary excretion of the mercapturic acids of the pollutants, benzene, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde, were measured before and during the intervention using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Rapid and sustained, statistically significant (P ≤ 0.01) increases in the levels of excretion of the glutathione-derived conjugates of benzene (61%), acrolein (23%), but not crotonaldehyde, were found in those receiving broccoli sprout beverage compared with placebo. Excretion of the benzene-derived mercapturic acid was higher in participants who were GSTT1-positive than in the null genotype, irrespective of study arm assignment. Measures of sulforaphane metabolites in urine indicated that bioavailability did not decline over the 12-week daily dosing period. Thus, intervention with broccoli sprouts enhances the detoxication of some airborne pollutants and may provide a frugal means to attenuate their
sociated long-term health risks.
